AT&T Rolling Out HSDPA 7.2, Faster 3G Network
Gearlog — We've known it's coming for ages now, but AT&T today officially announced they're rolling out HSDPA 7.2, the latest version of their 3G network. HSDPA 7.2 should double AT&T's effective 3G download speeds. According to AT&T, the network upgrades will start later this year and be completed in 2011. AT&T isn't promising any specific real-life speeds, but they'll presumably be about double what we're getting today with AT&T's HSDPA 3.6 devices. The only problem there is, in our tests we've gotten wildly varying speeds with HSDPA 3.6 devices - anywhere from about 400 kbps up to 1.6 mbps downstream, with speeds heavily affected ...

AT&T announces speed increases, less suckage
9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence — The iPhone's sole US carrier, AT&T  today made some pretty significant announcements on their plans for the rest of 2009 and beyond. They will continue to roll out 3G to more markets (20), upgrade to 7.2 Mbs equipment and begin deployment of 4G LTE networks in 2011.  AT&T is also doubling its spectrum and adding more towers to cover more areas including the inside of buildings.  AT&T's 2009 initiatives also include: Near-Doubling Radio Frequency Capacity. In 2008 and 2009 to date, high-quality 850 MHz spectrum has been deployed in more than half of AT&T’s 3G network footprint to improve ...

AT&T’s HSPA Upgrade Might Cement Future iPhone Exclusivity
jkOnTheRun — I was just reading the official AT&T press release which tells us what we already knew: the carrier is doubling their 3G network speed over the next year or two. This effort will raise the theoretical speeds from 3.6 Mbps to 7.2 Mbps, although in the real world we generally see half of that throughput. Although it seems unrelated, I started thinking about Apple’s iPhone relationship with AT&T and the swirling rumors of other US carriers getting a crack at the iPhone in the future. I don’t think it’s going to happen and a large part of my belief is due to AT&T’s network upgrade plans. ...

AT&T plans to boost 3G network speeds
Macworld — Posted on by Dan Moren , Macworld.com In the world of high-speed cell connections, there’s no such thing as too fast. Which is why we greet the news that AT&T is planning on upgrading its 3G network to the faster HSPA 7.2 technology with a ceremonial fist pump. Our excitement is tempered somewhat, however, by the fact that while the transition will start later this year, it won’t be finished until 2011, at which point most companies—AT&T included, as the company admits—will be moving on to the fourth-generation LTE protocol. AT&T’s current system uses the HSPA 3.6 standard, in which the theoretical peak download speed of the network is ...

The upgrade to High-Speed Packet Access technology will provide 7.2 Mbps speeds, doubling the current 3G network speed and serving as a step toward the future deployment of an even higher-speed LTE (4G) network in the future. In addition, AT&T has announced plans to enhance its mobile broadband coverage by nearly doubling its wireless 3G spectrum in most metropolitan areas to provide better in-building coverage and network capacity. These improvements will be rolled out later this year, and the company expects to have them fully ...

Faster AT&T 3G network on the way
The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) — Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, WirelessAT&T today announced that it will begin upgrading its network to the faster High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology later this year. The 3G network upgrade will not be completed until 2011, at which time AT&T plans to start deploying the 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. This is contrary to previous roadmaps, which showed HSPA+ (20+ Mbps) deployment occurring prior to the move to LTE. Devices compatible with HSPA 7.2 3G networks are capable of a theoretical peak download speed of 7.2 Mbps (megabits per second), or almost a megabyte per second. While ...

AT&T Plans 3G Network Upgrades, 4G Rollout
Wired: Gadget Lab — AT&T on Wednesday announced plans to significantly boost its 3G network performance and begin testing its new 4G network over the next two years. The 3G upgrade involves boosting the network to High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2, which the company claims will double peak speeds of the current network. AT&T said these upgrades would begin later this year. Farther down the road, AT&T will begin trials of its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in 2010 with plans to begin deployment in 2011. LTE is a new wireless technology that is expected to become a global standard. Many domestic and international carriers, including ...

Looking Forward To Streaming Live Video From Your iPhone 3G S? Not So Fast.
TechCrunch — There’s a poorly kept secret in Silicon Valley: A lot of people are using their iPhones to stream live video over the web. The reason this is kept secret is because technically, no one is supposed to have such an app on their iPhone. You see, Apple has not allowed any of these live-streaming apps into the App Store. One reason is because these apps use hacks to get the iPhone’s camera to record video. But another is undoubtedly because AT&T does not want live streaming video clogging up its network. But if Apple and AT&T think videos like this and this were shot on something like a Nokia N95, they’re ...
