MacBook Graphic Switching is Disabled by Software
Wired: Gadget Lab — ... Perhaps we'll see a software update soon. Perhaps it will be a paid firmware upgrade like the notorious $2 802.11n enabler. Or maybe we'll have to wait for OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Our guess would be that the OS might need a significant rejig to support these features -- perhaps applications which rely heavily on the Core Graphics framework would just glitch and crash upon such a switch. But, as ever with Apple, we never know anything for sure until it happens. Confirmed: Apple Can Enable Dual GPU and On-the-Fly Switching in MacBook Pro [Gizmodo] ...

In a demo given to Gizmodo, NVIDIA representatives confirmed that the 9400M chipset used in Apple's latest notebooks is capable of instantly switching from the integrated GPU to an external GPU. Additionally, it can work with two GPUs separately, as is the case currently, or can use both GPUs simultaneously for even greater performance gains. The only requirement now is if Apple to enable the features and get them working with Mac OS X. The ...

StrangeCharm - Particle Debris (Week ending Oct 24)
The Mac Observer — ... last week. Back to this week. On Wednesday Gizmodo revealed that there is more going on with the dual graphics units in the new MacBook Pro than Apple has publicized. Why Apple chose implement the new NVIDA GPUs they way they did is currently a mystery, but there’s hope that, at some point, users won’t have to log out to change GPUs. And maybe it’ll end up being a four computational core machine after all. Time will tell. On Thursday, VentureBeat ...
