Google launches Chrome for Mac, Linux - with a caveat

... finish. Google releases more developer preview builds than betas, which in turn accumulate until the company's satisfied with their progress enough to roll out another stable build. "[We're] trying to get Google Chrome on these platforms stable enough for a beta release as soon as possible!" added Smith and Grunberg. Although the two program managers acknowledged that the developer preview crashes, Computerworld ran the Mac browser for several hours without a hitch. Both the Mac and ...
Google Chrome developer preview (unofficially) released
The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) —
Filed under: Internet Tools, Beta Beat Digg's Kevin Rose, perennial purveyor of information that just "fell off the back of the truck" shared a link early this morning to Google's new, supercharged, Webkit-based browser -- for Mac.
The new browser, Chrome, is clearly marked as a developer preview, and not meant for general browsing. In fact, as a good Mac citizen, it will refuse to set itself as your default browser.
It scores a 100 on the Acid3 test straight out of the box, but doesn't pass: it fails something called the ...

... that window whatsoever. I wasn't able to close that window, either, so a "force quit" of Chrome was necessary to get it back up and running. Besides that, during the time I played with Chrome, I haven't experienced any other crashes. Overall, this early preview version of Google Chrome for Mac looks and feels just about right, although it has quite a long way to go before it can make it mainstream or become your default browser. If you want to take Chrome for Mac for a spin, you can download it here , but just keep in mind that this version is not for general use. ...

... on the "Chome is now available for Mac story." A few points:
It isn't Chrome, it is Chromium, the open source, not-ready-for-prime-time version. It will only be Chrome when it gets a real Google Beta tag, signifying it is ready for the masses. Sergey Brin isn't even using it on Mac (but is on Linux)
It has been publically available for a month, the only difference is that Google put a pretty download page up yesterday.
It still isn't nearly complete feature-wise. It doesn't ...
Developer Preview of Google Chrome for OS X Available

... An early version of Chrome is now publicly available for Mac users, at least what there is of it. As the Chromium Blog glibly posted, this release is intended for developers who take “great pleasure in incomplete, unpredictable, and potentially crashing software.” Having caveated that, Chrome feels fast, faster than Safari, and that is saying something.
Something else to be said in favor of Chrome is that it’s stable. Not that this release doesn’t crash — it does, but it just dies gracefully. Unlike Safari, which ...

If digging through build trees for a Mac build of Chromium (the open source project behind Chrome) was more trouble than you wanted to go through, here's some good news for you: Google today announced availability of an official Google Chrome for Mac developer preview at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco.
