Steve Jobs concisely answers the MacBook FireWire question
Infinite Loop — ... from the 13" MacBook has certainly stirred a lot of consternation among the Mac faithful. But when asked via e-mail about editing home video with the latest MacBook, The Steve just had this to say : "Actually, all of the new HD camcorders of the past few years use USB 2." The truth is, FireWire and in particular the FW400 variety has been slowing disappearing for the last few years. Which is true, but may not pacify folks with camcorders that are FireWire only. Or who like ...

Purported E-Mail From Jobs Defends Firewire's Death
Wired: Gadget Lab — ... into problems testing JVCs and Sanyos. And occasionally Sony camcorders don't work out so well either. Tapeless camcorders are so unreliable with the Mac that I still haven't jumped on that bandwagon. The video editors at Wired.com, who use Macs, also stay away from tapeless. So yes -- the lack of Firewire on a MacBook would bug all of us who stick with the old-fashioned MiniDV-and-Firewire combo. Your thoughts, Gadget Lab readers? Is Firewire a big deal?
