Apparently, the latest firmware revisions have hidden inside some nice metadata that refers to a produce code of “iPhone2, 1” which is definitely a higher number that the Apple iPhone 3G which is “iPhone1, 2.”
Furthermore, an ad network has been reporting web hits from an iPhone2, 1 so it does look to be quite real. So the question is what is iPhone2, 1?
