TheAppleBlog —
Sling Media, Inc. have announced at Macworld that they are working on a version of SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone. Demonstrations are being given at the conference, and the software would seem to be in the later stages of development.
The software provides a way to push TV content wirelessly (via 3G or Wi-Fi) to your iPhone; everything including standard TV content, local channels and video on demand. The iPhone is also able to function as a wireless remote control for your digital video recorder, to control the playback of recordings and schedule new ones.

Rumor: Apple Rejecting SlingPlayer iPhone App to Please AT&T
Wired: Gadget Lab —
A gadget blog has reported a rumor that Apple plans to deny SlingPlayer — a popular TV-streaming service — from appearing as an app in the App Store. Why? To please AT&T, according to the unnamed source.
Electronista cites "a source close to Apple's approval processes," who claims Apple is giving SlingPlayer the red light because AT&T fears it will strain bandwidth on its network.

iPhone Hacks —
... things don't seem to going as planned since then as folks at Fudzilla are reporting that as per their sources Apple has rejected the iPhone app based on AT&T's request as they have concerns on bandwidth consumption. I doubt that's the reason as it would be quite controversial if AT&T blocked SlingPlayer from the App Store as the SlingPlayer Mobile app is already available for other mobile devices such as BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, or Symbian smartphones. SlingMedia's iPhone page still says that they have submitted the app to the App Store for approval. Dozer, one of ...

Apple Cripples, Approves SlingPlayer iPhone App
Wired: Gadget Lab —
An iPhone version of SlingPlayer, a popular TV streaming service, will be appearing in the App Store on Wednesday morning, according to a Sling spokesman. A previous rumor that Apple would reject the application appears to have been true, as Sling crippled the app at Apple’s request in order to gain approval.
When Sling originally submitted its SlingPlayer app, the software had the ability to stream video over the iPhone’s 3G, EDGE and Wi-Fi connections. However, Apple required Sling to modify the app to work with Wi-Fi only, according to Sling.
“We took this approach at Apple’s ...
Crippled SlingPlayer Software Highlights Network Neutrality Issue

... SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone should be hitting the iTunes App Store right about now. I knew it was coming as I’ve been using a test version of the application for several weeks now. Unfortunately, that’s not exactly the version that Apple approved. The version I have supports streaming over Wi-Fi, EDGE and 3G networks. With my first-gen iPhone, I couldn’t test the 3G support, but the app worked great over Wi-Fi. EDGE is a less than optimal experience that I wouldn’t recommend with SlingPlayer Mobile on any platform. In my usage, I think the app ...

I know, there are so many iPhones that it would swamp the inadequate AT&T network, but what did AT&T expect when they fought so hard to get the iPhone?
