For apps of course! I don’t know about you, but I can’t even remember a time in my life when I needed a real compass, let alone a built-in digital compass in my cell phone. That’s why when Apple annouced that there would be a digital compass in the iPhone, I knew it would be good for more than just hiking trips.
Case and point, the video below of the prototype build of Air Coaster 3D. As you’ll see from the video below, the app actually uses the digital compass to allow you to change your point of view by moving your iPhone in different directions.

iPhone developer Ziconic has released a video that demonstrates usage of the digital compass in the new iPhone 3GS as a view control mechanism.
A prototype build of the developer's AirCoaster 3D [App Store], an app that allows users to design and ride 3D roller coasters on the iPhone and iPod touch, allows the user to move the iPhone about in order to change the viewpoint of the rider.
