Apple Kinda Had iPhone Copy/Paste Figured Out with Newton 15 Years Ago (But Not Really) [IPhone]
Gizmodo —
There's a lot of hypothesizing and App Store creating going on today because the supposedly simple act of cutting and pasting is absent from the iPhone. What's strange about all this is that Apple sorta had it figured out 15 years ago with the Newton. As the video shows, cutting and pasting with a touch screen or stylus on a Mac product, circa 1993, couldn't have been easier. Of course, back then it was with a stylus (not a finger); and then there's the fact that touching and dragging on an iPhone is reserved for the magnifier function... wait, maybe this isn't as easy as it ...
Touchscreen Copy and Paste Was Easy On Newton…
Cult of Mac —
The most controversial omission of the iPhone’s feature set is its bizarre lack of copy and paste. While anyone who has spent a cursory amount of time trying to figure out the interaction design for multitouch copy and paste using Apple’s guidelines will discover that it’s a little bit harder than it seems.
Even so, it shouldn’t be out of Apple’s depth — they’re kind of the best in the world for interface design. Which is why it should come as no surprise that Apple had touchscreen copy and paste figured out on the Newton 15 years ...

This is a rerun - but a splendid one. It shows how Apple could implement copy-&-past on the iPhone - using 15-year old technology put together for the Newton MessagePad. Hats off to BoingBoing’s Mark Frauenfelder for the spot. ...

Copy and paste on the Newton
The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) —
Filed under: Hardware, Portables, iPhone, Apple History While everyone waits for Apple to implement copy and paste on the iPhone (or hacks their own), Newton users have been enjoying it for 15 years. Here's a great video of the just how Apple pulled it off on a previous touch device. Clicking and dragging selects the text, and moving it to the side of the screen sends it to the clipboard, represented by a shortcut. You can then move multiple copies out of the clipboard and into your applications with a drag of that shortcut. It seems like a ...
YouTube Find: Newton copy and paste
Apple Gazette —
One of the things most of us hope to see today at the “Let’s Rock” iPhone event is a copy and paste feature added to the iPhone OS. The video above shows us an example of how it might be done, by taking a look at the way Apple did it with the Newton 15 years ago.
Now obviously this wouldn’t be an exact way to get the job done, but it does give you an idea of the though process that has to be in mind to make this work.
Will we see copy and paste today? I’m not holding my breath, but it would be nice.
