iPhone offline apps made possible by HTML 5 compliant Mobile Safari
9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence —
It shouldn't come as a surprise that offline web apps are on the way to iPhone and Android platforms in the form of Google Offline. New functionality being shown by Google publicly for the first time, allows mobile devices to access data that has been locally stored on the device without any network connections. A first for new-age mobile devices, and a breakthrough for developers.
iPhoneBuzz posts a video and images of the new functionality which is split into three categories. First, a web-page or web application can implement a local database which can store data directly on the device. Second, App Cache allows that same application to store its executable state directly on the device, which means that form processes being sent from a user’s “touch” ...
Browser-Based Offline Gmail Demonstrated On iPhone, Android [Gmail]
Gizmodo —
Gmail's desktop offline mode relies on browser extensions, but Google engineers have figured out a way to use HTML5 standards—supported by the iPhone, Android and Pre's webkit browsers—to accomplish the same thing natively. Google demonstrated a new Gmail mobile web app that leverages the HTML5 database and app cache features, which allow web apps to store certain types of data locally, much like Google Gears. The result is a super-slick app that retains a database of messages even when your cellphone lack any connectivity, and that'll allow regulars tasks—message ...

No Plugins Required: HTML Hack Allows Offline Gmail Support On iPhones, Android, Pre
iSmashPhone —
Google recently unveiled a non-browser-extension-based method of managing your Gmail account when you're offline. Up until now, Gmail users who wanted to compose and manage messages without being connected have had to rely on Google Gears. The new method (demonstrated in the above video) accomplishes the same functionality with native HTML5 database and app cache features. The advantage here is that, rather than the need for creating a bunch of browser/OS-specific extensions, the entire offline process can be managed in a way that's compatible with most Webkit-based smartphone browsers. That includes ...
